What really is ambition?

Hello precious reader, in this blog post, we'll introduce you to a variety of anonymous university students' voices, presented to you as "voice 1" to "voice 5" as we tackle the topic "what really is ambition?" We hope you enjoy it.

1.  How do people think of ambition?

Voice 1: I think of ambition as motivation that manifests internally in a person in the form of a resolve to aim for a particular goal, outline the necessary steps to work toward a related plan, and make attempts toward achieving the goal.

2. Advantages of ambition

Voice 2: In life's journey, ambition serves as the beacon that guides us towards personal growth and achievement. Embracing ambition offers a multitude of advantages that can empower us to reach new heights and fulfill our true potential. Here are some benefits:

Driving Force: Ambition acts as a powerful driving force, igniting the passion and motivation needed to pursue our goals and dreams relentlessly. It propels us forward, even in the face of challenges and setbacks, pushing us to overcome obstacles that would otherwise deter us.

Goal Clarity: Ambition demands that we define our aspirations clearly. By setting ambitious goals, we gain a sense of purpose and direction in life. Having a well-defined vision allows us to focus our efforts and prioritize actions that align with our objectives.

Continuous Growth: With ambition as our guide, we embrace a growth mindset, constantly seeking opportunities to learn, develop new skills, and expand our knowledge. This ongoing personal development journey not only enhances our abilities but also fosters resilience in the face of change.

Enhanced Resilience: Ambitious individuals tend to develop greater resilience. The process of striving for ambitious goals naturally exposes us to challenges and setbacks. However, these experiences serve as valuable lessons that build our resilience and adaptability, making us stronger in the face of adversity.

Inspiration to others: Ambition can be contagious. When we wholeheartedly pursue our dreams, we inspire those around us to do the same. By being ambitious, we create a positive ripple effect, encouraging others to set their own lofty goals and become the best version of themselves.

3. Disadvantages of ambition

Voice 3: Although being ambitious has advantages, there are down sides to it such as:

Ambitious people spend most of their time and effort to exert themselves to reach their goals. Ambition may cause one to forget to take care for themselves physically and mentally.

Another disadvantage is that none but you know the struggles you go through to exert yourself to achieve what you want to achieve. It might be a  challenge to open up to harsh unconstructive criticism originating from different point of views.

4. Age and ambition

Voice 4: From the perspective of a relatively young person in their twenties, I am compelled to think that we get more ambitious as we age, but perhaps that ambition also lessens at some point in our later years.

What do I mean by getting "more ambitious?" My view is that, as one gets more knowledgeable of themself and the world, they have more incentive to pursue innate goals they set for themselves, as opposed to goals externally imposed on them.

However, my views are generalized and lack nuance such as taking into account people's different circumstances and internal factors that influence how people respond to life such as different temperaments.

My views also do not take into account different people's changing appreciation of goal setting as they age.

My views are informed by an observation of the world, and books, articles and social media posts that I have read.

One thing that I find important to note is that it is important to find ways to quantify one's ambition should one be interested in converting their ambition into tangible results.

As a university student, one has opportunities to measure one's ambitions and turn them into tangible results. There is a sense of deferred responsibility in one's earlier years. As one gets older, it seems as though one may need to be more proactive in measuring their own progress because as one ages, one needs to assume more responsibility, in their daily life and for outlining their criteria for good performance. I think this difference in how we relate to responsibility at different ages can impact one's relationship with responsibility as we age, but it’s not deterministic.

5. Ambition and self-control

Voice 5: Ambition and self-control are two of the most important qualities you can have in life. Ambition is what drives you to pursue your goals and dreams, while self-control is what keeps you on track and helps you overcome obstacles along the way.

To be ambitious means to have a clear idea of what you want to achieve and to be willing to work hard to make it happen. This requires a combination of vision, determination, and perseverance. It's important to set realistic goals for yourself and to break them down into smaller, achievable steps. This way, you can measure your progress and stay motivated even when things get tough.

At the same time, it's important to exercise self-control. This means being able to resist temptation and stay focused on your goals, even when distractions arise. It's easy to get sidetracked by things like social media, TV, or other forms of entertainment, but staying disciplined and focused is key to achieving your goals.
